To date, her focus has been issues such as security in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade, as well as other topics. At the moment the director is not in contact with many reporters. The attention she attracted in March came when she was named one of the contenders to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is plagued by various problems, such as the president's role as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the goal, coordinating policies with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and the policy shop, and broader communications. Her focus so far is on topics like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters frequently in her current job. It was in March that she received a flurry of media attention when it became known that Schlapp would be an option to fill Hope Hicks's post as director of communication. It has been a battle that has been brutal. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as another candidate for the position with the same name, Tony, began fighting on the news. Schlapp said that when she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she had a conversation with the latter.
